Description

A clean, sharp edge is the difference between skating the way you want to and fighting your skates all session. Sharpening is the most routine bit of skate maintenance there is, and it's also the one with the most immediate effect on how you feel on the ice.

When we sharpen a skate, a hollow is ground into the bottom of the blade, leaving two edges - one on either side - that bite into the ice as you skate. The depth of that hollow (your depth of hollow, or DoH) decides how the skate feels underfoot. A deeper hollow digs in for more grip and sharper, more explosive acceleration. A shallower one trades some of that bite for glide and speed in a straight line. There's no single 'best' hollow - the right one comes down to your size, your skating style and what feels right to you.

Every pair is ground to your specified hollow using professional sharpening equipment, by technicians who sharpen for players of every level, week in and week out. You tell us the hollow you want, mail your steel to us, and we'll have it sharpened and on its way back to you within 24 hours of it arriving.

We're committed to this rapid turnaround time because we know how vital it is to minimise time off the ice when you're mid-season. Our mail-in service covers the whole of the UK, so where you play doesn't limit what you can get done.

Not sure which hollow suits your game? Our sharpening guide breaks it all down. Or if you'd rather talk it through with one of our technicians, drop into our Sheffield store or give us a call on 0114 244 3005.

FAQs

For sharpening, around every 8 to 10 hours of ice time is a sensible rule for a regular player. You'll know it's time when your edges feel less grippy, turns feel skiddy, or you're struggling to hold an edge in tight corners.

Profiling is less frequent. We recommend three times a season: start of season, mid-season, and before the playoffs. Hand sharpening can gradually wear down your profile over time, so keeping on top of it means you're always skating on steel that's shaped the way it should be. If you've just bought new steel, getting it profiled straight away is a very worthwhile upgrade, because factory profiles are shaped for the average player, not for you and your game.

For mail-in orders, we grind runners around within 24 hours of receiving them and post them back via 24-hour shipping. In many cases, this means we turn skate sharpenings around same-day.

If you're dropping your skates off in store, we offer a “while you wait” service (unless otherwise stated). During busier periods, our team will let you know if wait times are longer than normal. Skates dropped off for sharpening within 30 minutes of closing will be sharpened for the following day.

Your ROH sets the balance between grip and glide. A deeper hollow (smaller number, e.g. ⅜") grips harder for sharper acceleration. A shallower one (larger number, e.g. ⅝" or more) glides faster with less bite. If you're not sure, ½" is a solid all-rounder and a good starting point. Already know what you skate on? Just pick it from the dropdown. For a full breakdown, see our sharpening guide, or call us on 0114 244 3005 and we'll recommend one.

Most modern skates use a quick-release holder, which makes this straightforward. On Bauer skates with a Tuuk LightSpeed Edge holder, press the trigger at the heel inward and the blade pops out. On CCM SpeedBlade holders, look for the release dial or trigger and slide the blade out heel first. Always use a towel or glove when handling the steel. Even unsharpened runners have an edge.

If you're unsure, our team will be happy to point you in the right direction, give them a call on 0114 244 3005

Wrap the runners in a cloth or bubble wrap so the edges don't get damaged in transit. Put them in a small box or padded envelope, include your order number inside the package, and post to us.

Yes. If you're local to Sheffield, bring your skates in and we'll take care of everything. If you can't make it in, the mail-in service works just as well. Remove your runners, pack them with your order number, and post them to us. We'll grind them to your specification and then ship them back within 48hrs of receiving them for profiling, and 24hrs for sharpening.

Absolutely. We sharpen and profile steel for skaters of every level across all the major brands - it doesn't matter where your skates came from.
