Description
A clean, sharp edge is the difference between skating the way you want to and fighting your skates all session. Sharpening is the most routine bit of skate maintenance there is, and it's also the one with the most immediate effect on how you feel on the ice.
When we sharpen a skate, a hollow is ground into the bottom of the blade, leaving two edges - one on either side - that bite into the ice as you skate. The depth of that hollow (your depth of hollow, or DoH) decides how the skate feels underfoot. A deeper hollow digs in for more grip and sharper, more explosive acceleration. A shallower one trades some of that bite for glide and speed in a straight line. There's no single 'best' hollow - the right one comes down to your size, your skating style and what feels right to you.
Every pair is ground to your specified hollow using professional sharpening equipment, by technicians who sharpen for players of every level, week in and week out. You tell us the hollow you want, mail your steel to us, and we'll have it sharpened and on its way back to you within 24 hours of it arriving.
We're committed to this rapid turnaround time because we know how vital it is to minimise time off the ice when you're mid-season. Our mail-in service covers the whole of the UK, so where you play doesn't limit what you can get done.
Not sure which hollow suits your game? Our sharpening guide breaks it all down. Or if you'd rather talk it through with one of our technicians, drop into our Sheffield store or give us a call on 0114 244 3005.
