Hockey Goes Higher

Heading to the Himalayas for Hockey

Five Hockey players from Sheffield’s Don Valley Vikings are making a once in a lifetime trip to play Hockey in the Himalayas.

They will attempt along with like-minded Hockey players from all over the world, the Highest Altitude Hockey game, the attempt will be be fully adjudicated by the Guinness World Records team.

Matt Pearson, Greg Jones, Darren Allott, Nick Onslow & Matt Hogan headed out to the Northern Indian town of Leh on Jan. 29. In addition to breaking records, the trip will help local youth access the sport we all know and love.

The players have been jointly sponsored by our friends at Warrior Hockey UK, and Puck Stop. They will be using their Warrior Sticks and Gloves during the record attempt, along with the all-important Warrior winter suits and various beanies that will be pretty essential to staying warm at such high altitudes.

When Matt H and Greg visited us in store to pick up their Warrior gear, both were in high spirits and looking forward to the adventure. Ahead of them was an 11 hour flight to India, with an additional transfer to the town of Leh in the Ladakh region.

They will spend a few days in Leh to begin acclimatisation to the altitude, which is at 3,500 meters above sea level in the Himalayas. Whilst getting used to the altitude, the players will take part in a few exhibition games, scrimmages and coaching sessions with the local children.

Once they have passed a final medical exam, they will get the green light to play in the record attempt, taking place at 4,000 meters elevation on a full rink constructed by the Hockey Foundation.

The Hockey Foundation is a New York based non for profit charity, which believe that Hockey has the ability to make a positive impact upon lives, and are trying to make a difference, one puck at a time.
